What is ASM?
ASM — the Union of Artisanal Miners for Prosperity — is an organization representing artisanal mining cooperatives and miners in the Democratic Republic of Congo. We work to professionalize the sector and create greater access to financing, resources, expertise, and responsible markets.
Who can become a member of ASM?
Legally recognized artisanal mining cooperatives in the Democratic Republic of Congo may apply for membership. Membership is voluntary and subject to the requirements outlined in ASM’s governing statutes.
How does ASM support artisanal miners?
ASM supports miners and cooperatives through training, access to financing and equipment, commercial partnerships, compliance support, mineral analysis and certification, and opportunities to strengthen their operations.
How does ASM promote transparency in mineral sales?
ASM encourages independent mineral analysis, certification, and traceability through qualified and approved laboratories. This helps cooperatives better understand the value of their minerals and supports more transparent and responsible commercialization.
What is ASM’s vision for artisanal mining in the DRC?
ASM envisions an artisanal and small-scale mining sector that is formal, responsible, profitable, inclusive, respectful of human rights, and a driver of sustainable community development throughout the Democratic Republic of Congo.
